Sumit Dua
Sumit is a 2nd year medical student at USC – Keck School of Medicine.
He attained his undergraduate degrees in Biochemistry & Cell Biology
and Psychology at the University of California, at San Diego. Prior
to attending medical school, he founded and directed an Information
Technology firm. Sumit’s interests include magic (especially card-magic),
films, and photography. He has way too much time on his hands and
therefore spends a majority of that at Starbucks doing stuff like
this.
Donny Hannoun
Donny is a 2nd year medical student that attended UC Santa Barbara
for his undergraduate education. He received a Bachelor of Sciences
degree in Biochemistry. He is currently interested in Hematology/Oncology
and is doing research on the correlation between important clotting
factors involved in the blood and prostate cancer. Donny is a big-time
USC Trojans fan, and is always up for watching football and playing
a variety of sports.
Aaron Neinstein
Aaron is a second year medical student at the Keck School of Medicine
of USC. He graduated with a B.A. in American Studies from Northwestern
University. He enjoys playing guitar, basketball, skiing, baseball,
wiffle ball, traveling, and photography. He loves talking about
politics and sports and is impatiently anticipating the day the
Dodgers win the World Series.
Heather Stocks
Heather is a second year medical student at USC. She attended UCLA
undergrad as a Psychobiology major and was very active in clinical
work. She’s interested in surgery of some type and enjoys hands-on
subjects like Anatomy. Outside of school, she likes ballet and movies,
but her favorite thing is shopping and she is doing a great job
of spending all those medical school loans.
Shahrzad Akhtar
Shahrzad is a 2nd year medical student at USC. She attended UC
Berkeley for undergraduate studies and majored in English. She is
interested in primary care and enjoys working with people, but in
uncertain of the field of medicine she would like to pursue. Outside
of school, she enjoys spending time with friends and family, traveling,
laughing, and playing with her cat.
Joshua Ball
Josh is a third year medical student at the University of Missouri
in Columbia. He attended Drury University as an undergraduate and
received B.A. degrees in Biology and in Psychology. When not being
pimped into submission on the wards, Josh enjoys spending time with
his two young children and wife. He is currently considering a career
in radiology.
John Compoginis
John is currently a second year medical student. He earned a bachelors
degree in Molecular and Cell Biology with a minor in Toxicology
from the University of California at Berkeley. He is interested
in anesthesiology and his hobbies include drawing and NBA basketball.
Marisa Fernandez
Marisa is a second year medical student at USC, Keck School of
Medicine. She graduated from UC Berkeley in 1998 with a degree in
Psychology. Following graduation, she completed a post-baccalaureate
program at University of Pennsylvania, and has worked designing
databases, writing developmental psychology books and dabbled some
in graphic design. She enjoys martial arts, taking art classes at
night and photography.
Katrina Fu
Katrina attended Stanford University, where she earned a B.S. degree
in Biological Sciences. She enjoys a variety of things from cooking,
baking, and knitting to shooting hoops, exercising, and soaking
in the great outdoors. Katrina is currently a second year medical
student at USC, and plans to seek a possible career in pediatrics.
Her philosophy – “There are a lot of books available out there to
help pull you through medical school and boards – this is great,
but one can easily get lost in it all. So, I chose to review books
for Gotmedbooks.com because I personally found it very beneficial
when other people would give me their advice and opinions on what
books are helpful and why, and what books are better left on the
shelf."
Golnaz Haghighian
Goli is a second year medical student. She completed her undergraduate
education at Duke University where she received a B.S. in Biology.
She loves movies, reading, and Italian food.
Paul Jhun
Paul attended Stanford University, where he earned a B.S. degree
in Electrical Engineering. He spends most of his extracurricular
time and passion devoted to a local church and a homeless ministry
located in the heart of downtown Los Angeles. Paul is currently
a second year medical student at USC, and upon entering residency,
he hopes to also enroll in a theological seminary program.
Monish Laxpati
Monish is a second year medical student at the Keck School of Medicine
at USC. He also attended USC for undergrad where he earned a B.A.
in Biology and minors in Economics and Bioethics. In his time away
from the books, he enjoys snowboarding, music, movies, and most
importantly sleeping. Monish is a also a huge Trojan football fan,
and regularly attends the football games, including the 2004 Rose
Bowl and 2005 Orange Bowl. Back-2-Back Champs! Fight On!
Jennifer Malin
Jennifer is a second year medical student at the University of
Southern California Keck School of Medicine. She grew up skiing
and snowboarding in Boulder, Colorado, then moved to Los Angeles
and attended undergrad at Pitzer College in Pomona. Some of her
hobbies include reading, jogging, skiing and recent attempts at
surfing.
Andréa Cristine Rios
Andréa is a second year medical student at Western University
of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific
in Pomona, CA. She has been involved in motor vehicle crash injury
prevention research at UC Irvine’s Emergency Department for three
years and has submitted and conducted several research projects.
She is the current president of the Western University Chapter of
the Latino Medical Student Association and is very active in Latino
healthcare issues. Andréa was also a former high school science
teacher, and is currently designing health science curriculum for
the Academy of Culture and Technology Charter School in Pomona,
CA. She is also a student advisor for the Center for Intercultural/Cross-cultural
Program Committee at Western University.
Tanmai Saxena
Tanmai is currently in his second medical school year in the MD/PhD
program at USC Keck School of Medicine. He attended University of
California, San Diego for his undergraduate studies, earning a BS
in Biochemistry/Cell Biology and a BS in Economics/Management Science.
His current research in Genetic Epidemiology promises to keep him
in school for at least six more years, after which he has two more
years of medical school rotations, then will spend another five-or-so
years in a residency program and then finish with 2 years in a fellowship
just in time to retire poor, single, disgruntled, with a fully exhaustive
outdated education. Outside of the classroom, Tanmai enjoys playing
and watching basketball and thinking about why.
Amir Schricker
Amir is a 2nd year medical student at USC. He graduated from UC
Berkeley with a BS in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
and then earned an MS from the Johns Hopkins University in Biomedical
Engineering. He is interested in cardiology, specifically electrophysiology,
a field that he has been involved with for several years.
Peter Thompson
Peter received his Master's degree from USC in 2000 from the Dept.
of Cell & Neurobiology, having studied anatomical sciences and medical
education. He taught Gross anatomy and Neuroanatomy to the 1st year
medical class during that time. Since then, he has developed and
taught the USC Summer Bridge Anatomy course for the last 5 summers
while teaching high school biology full time. Currently Peter is
a 2nd year medical student at USC Keck School of Medicine where
he served as a Gross Anatomy teaching assisstant for his fellow
classmates during year one. Overall, he has about 7 years teaching
experience in Gross anatomy and is dedicated to education both now
and in his future career as a physician.
Amy Tu
Amy is from picturesque Oak Park, California and is currently a
2nd year medical student at USC’s Keck School of Medicine. She is
a true spirited Trojan as she finished her undergraduate degree
in Biomedical Engineering at USC as well. When she has spare time
away from reviewing medical texts, she loves trying new restaurants,
shopping, playing and listening to music, eating fruit, cheese,
and chocolate, and making crafty things with ribbon.
Kristina Vander Wall
Kristina has a B.A. degree in Molecular and Cell Biology and in
English from the University of California at Berkeley. She is currently
a second-year medical student at the Keck School of Medicine at
USC. In her spare time she coaches for the Special Olympics, runs,
watches football and reads non-med-school books. Kristina is currently
doing an independent project investigating health care resources
for the developmentally disabled. She loves dogs, fuzzy blankets,
and Ben and Jerry's Cherry Garcia.
Jeff Wang
Jeff is currently a second-year medical student at the Keck USC
School of Medicine. He graduated from the University of Southern
California with a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering/Bioethics. He is
interests include any kind of cycling, playing tennis, and watcing
his Trojans battle to the top of college sports. Jeff recently spent
6 weeks in China researching the pathogenesis of Severe Acute Respiratory
Syndrome (SARS). Upcoming projects include a Korean/Chinese/English
translation guide for clinicians, redoing the entire kitchen and
dining area of his condo, and prepping for the Step 1s.
Daniel Weingrow
Daniel is a second year medical student at Western University of
Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine. He attended Lawrence
University for undergraduate coursework; triple majoring in Biology,
Psychology and Neuroscience. During the summer of 2004, Daniel helped
work on vaccine development for Pseudomonas Aeruginosa at UCSF Department
of Anesthesiology. When not studying, Daniel works lecturing to
first year medical students on the basic clinical sciences. He plans
on doing a residency in either Cardiology or Neurology.
Kumar Desai
Kumar Desai is a graduate of UC Berkeley and majored in Interdisciplinary
Studies with a concentration in cognitive and computer sciences.
The title of his subject of interest was: Human Interaction with
Tools - from stones to computers. Based in San Francisco,
Kumar is the lead programmer/designer for the GotMedBooks
website and works on web programming projects all over the USA.
