Together they act as a committee and make recommendations for Gotmedbooks.com.
These three groups are able to provide input from their own perspectives,
helping keep the interest of all groups balanced. The members offer
valuable insight on behalf of students, faculty, and the publishers. |

Allan Abbott, M.D.
Allan Abbott, M.D., is a Professor of Clinical Family Medicine.
He is currently the Associated Dean for Curriculum and Continuing
Medical Education at Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern
California. Dr. Abbott is Board Certified in Family Medicine and
Sports Medicine.
Mikel Snow, Ph.D.
Mikel Snow is Professor and Chair of the Department of Cell and
Neurobiology. He has been teaching gross anatomy to medical students
since he received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 1972.
He has held faculty positions at the University of Miami, USC School
of Medicine, University of Wisconsin School of Medicine, and most
recently again at the KECK School of Medicine. Dr Snow's research,
which he no longer does, was on the role of satellite cells during
muscle regeneration and muscle exercise. Dr. Snow gave up research
to focus on administrative roles as a Dean of Students and Admissions.
He is married to a hematologist, is an avid golfer, and is partial
to yellow labs.
Sarah Gee – MS I
A native of Los Angeles, Sarah Gee is the Co-President of USC-Keck
SOM's Class of 2008. She graduated magna cum laude from Princeton
University in with an A.B. in Anthropology. As an undergraduate,
Sarah studied medical anthropology. Her thesis titled, "Human Plastic:
A Critique of the Social World of Reconstructive Surgery," explored
the boundary between science and anthropology, the difference between
psycho-social normality and abnormality, the cross-cultural implications
of the doctor-patient relationship, and the doctor's identity as
an ethnographer. For the next two years, she worked for UCLA 's
Department of General Internal Medicine as part of a quality of
care research team that developed and analyzed concise clinical
process measures for patients with one or more diseases, including
ischemic heart disease, diabetes, low back pain, and asthma. In
her spare time, Sarah serves as a regional leader for the Princeton
University Annual Giving Campaign, and loves to paint and travel.
Andrea Cristine Rios – MS II
Andréa Cristine Rios is a second year medical student at Western
University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine of
the Pacific in Pomona, CA. She has been involved in motor vehicle
crash injury prevention research at UC Irvine’s Emergency Department
for three years and has submitted and conducted several research
projects. She is the current president of the Western University
Chapter of the Latino Medical Student Association and is very active
in Latino healthcare issues. Andréa was also a former high school
science teacher, and is currently designing health science curriculum
for the Academy of Culture and Technology Charter School in Pomona,
CA. She is also a student advisor for the Center for Intercultural/Cross-cultural
Program Committee at Western University.
Brian Hurley – MS III
Brian Hurley is a third year MD/MBA student at the Keck and Marshall
Schools of USC. Brian co-founded and currently serves as the Director
of Curriculum for the national Health Professional Students for Substance
Abuse Training organization. Brian is also the National Coordinator
for the American Medical Student Association's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual,
and Transgender People in Medicine Subcommittee, Chair of the Physicians-In-Training
Committee for the American Society of Addiction Medicine, and is the
2004-2005 Health Sciences Campus Liaison to the USC Graduate and Professional
Student Senate. He majored in Biochemistry and Neuroscience with a
Political Science minor at UCLA before entering medical school. Brian
is happy to be helping with Gotmedbooks.com and hopes his involvement
will improve the academic lives of health professional students everywhere.
Donna Balado
Donna Balado is the Senior Acquisitions Editor at Lippincott Williams
& Wilkins. Donna has been in medical publishing since 1982. She
began as an educational sales representative with W.B. Saunders
in Southern California and has wonderful memories of the USC Medical
Bookstore from those days. She has been in acquisitions since 1994
and has lived in Maryland since 1995. Any suggestions, comments,
and/or constructive criticism on LWW Medical Clerkship or Review
titles will be considered and most likely incorporated into revisions.
On a personal note: Donna has three daughters, two dogs, and four
cats.
Richard Derose
Richard DeRose has worked with McGraw Hill as a Medical Sales Rep
for the past three years and loves to interact with the Professors,
Medical, Physician Assistant ,Pharmacy, and NP Students. He graduated
from a great Southern California School -- Pepperdine University
with a degree in Business Administration.
Laura DeYoung
Laura is Vice President and Publisher for Blackwell Publishing.
Blackwell Publishing is the world's largest privately owned, academic
publishing company with staff and offices in the US, UK, Australia,
China, Denmark, Germany, and Japan. The Blackwell student line includes
series products such as Blueprints, the UCV's, In A Page, Boards
& Wards, and BoardBusters. In the twenty years Laura has been in
publishing she's held almost every job you can name in both marketing
and editorial for companies such as Edward Arnold, Aspen, Mosby,
Harcourt and Blackwell. Although she enjoys hiking, biking, and
gardening her favorite hobby is still creating and selling medical
books.
